Universally Accessible Museum Installation
The Design Problem
To design an educational, entertaining, and universally accessible experience for a museum installation.
Our Approach
To empathize with the needs of disabled visitors, we simulated several disabilities using a technique known as bodystorming.
From the emotions evoked from our disability experience, observations gathered at Indianapolis Children Museum and the Indiana University Art Museum, our team generated several concepts.
Our Concept
We decided to pursue an immersive installation that brings attention to the Baka Pygmies' game activity in Central Africa. Our team had two goals in mind when designing this concept. First, combine a virtual environment with physical objects to shape a deep and lasting emotion. Second, educate users about hunting - one of the most important activities in the Baka culture, and the symbolic rituals traditionally attached to it.
After the installation was completed, we evaluated our prototype through a series of interviews and user reflections. After each interview, some criticisms were incorporated into the redesign.
