Understanding Design, Kees Dorst

Categories: creative nourishment, readings

I just finished reading a book recommended by Erik Stolterman titled “Understanding Design - 175 Reflections of Being a Designer” by Kees Dorst. As I ran into another professor in the graduate program in the Informatics lobby, he mentioned the book is tailored towards second year graduate students. He explained to me that most of the first year students may not fully comprehend the value of these reflections because they never been situated in these design experiences. As a first year student, I disagree.

When I finished each academic project, not only did I recall certain experiences from industry to guide me, I constantly referred to this book. Both helped me stimulate my understanding of design and the consequences of my design decisions. I was able to relate and understand the author’s train of thought leading to his reflections. After reading “Understanding Design - 175 Reflections of Being a Designer”, I’ve placed even more of my time on reflection to identify opportunities to increase my design efficiency. A great book to add to your designer bookshelf!
