Building a Wiimote whiteboard

Categories: learning

After watching Johnny Chung Lee’s interactive Whiteboard using the Wii remote,

and Drew McKinney’s wiimote whiteboard vs. commercial electronic whiteboard assessment ,

Plus dealing with the frustration of finding dry erase markers disappearing or running out of ink in the Informatics buildings, I felt inspired to build one.

I haven’t started the process of constructing one yet. The only part I currently have is the Wii remote. Tomorrow Brandon, another graduate student in the HCI Design program, and I plan to go to the electronics store to search for some push button switches, wiring, and LEDs for the infrared pen.

  1. If you build it, they will come.

I would love to build one of these myself.
Please catalog the parts that you use.
I was just thinking that to be more sustainable, and perhaps offset cost, and increase participation, we could build a few of these for Bloomington Startup. I have two Wii remotes myself. I know Kevin has a couple. I’m sure we could get enough, then we would just need the software and the infrared pens. So please, let me know how your’s works out, cause if anything I would like to build one of these for myself!

I’ll definitely keep you posted on the parts I use.

I’m currently doing development on a Mac, which means I need Leopard to run parallels to compile the code. Still waiting for Leopard to come in the mail.
