Bloomington, Indiana

Categories: graduate school

To step into Bloomington, Indiana, the city I will be residing the next 2 years is surreal. New people and new surroundings, yet another opportunity to reinvent myself. What I mean by reinventing myself is to change my behavior and acquire the skill set to fulfill a missing piece in my “life pie”. In this case, a higher learning (or graduate degree) that propels me into a challenging career that I enjoy. As you can imagine, starting anything new and having no sense where it may lead is refreshing yet daunting. As my mom used to say, “Change is never easy.”

We arrived at Indiana University’s Office of Admissions for an information session, a campus tour, and a glimpse at graduate housing. The Big Ten campus is huge. On the campus alone, you will find the Biddel Hotel, 2 small burial grounds that hold only the Dunn ancestry (IU purchased the land from the Dunn family), the IU Auditorium which holds various broadway plays and performances, a non-denominational church, the Jordan river that flows through the university, an art museum, and much more. There is so much a student can do in spite of the preconceived notions of a small college town.

Despite the humid weather, I found many parallels between Indiana and my native state of California.
